Al Strong Presents: Charanga Carolina

Join us on the Roof for a performance from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Cuban music ensemble, Charanga Carolina. Charanga is traditionally associated with danzón, a musical and dance style with roots in European classical and Afro-Cuban music. Charanga played a central role in the development of the New York salsa scene in the ‘60s and ‘70s and continues to play an important part in contemporary Cuban and Latin dance music. UNC’s Charanga Carolina specializes in Cuban danzón, contemporary Cuban salsa, New York-style salsa and performs other Latin American music styles such as merengue, bomba, bossa nova, and tango. The ensemble brings these important musical repertories to life for their community. Jam session to follow the first set. No cover.

Nkenge 1x is a music producer/vocalist/instrumentalist, alumni of Durham’s NCSSM, the voice of “The Neighborhood” theme song on CBS, and a now resident of Los Angeles. This is the Nkenge 1x’s first headlining show in North Carolina; it is a homecoming many have asked for, and you won’t want to miss.

Durham Civil Rights Walking Tour

Explore Durham’s Civil Rights Legacy with PD’s walking tour. This exciting tour focuses on many of the sites in downtown Durham that were important during the 1950s and 60s Civil Rights movement, including the Durham County Courthouse, the Arts Center (originally Durham High School and later City Hall), the Kress and Woolworth buildings, sites of sit-in protests and the “Confronting Change” exhibit at the Carolina Theatre.

Liberty Arts Studios & Foundry and Durham Central Park present their 4th annual public Iron Pour at Durham Central Park, Saturday, November 16 from 4-9 p.m. All evening and into the night, 4,000 pounds of molten iron will be poured into molds, in an exciting fiery display creating the iron tiles made by the public and sculptures made by NC artists. Additionally, there will be Liberty Arts artists’ work for sale, Liberty Arts T-shirts, beer glasses and hand-blown glass pumpkins.
