E-Waste Recycling, Paper Shredding & Live Tree Drop-Off Event

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department is hosting a free event to collect old electronics (e-waste), papers for shredding, live Christmas trees, and old clothes and textiles on Saturday, January 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Durham County Memorial Stadium in the home side parking lot, located at 750 Stadium Dr. Staff will be on hand to assist with unloading these items.

MLK Day Of Service: Meal Packing

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, 2020, marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Dream Big 2020!

Dream Big is our annual celebration of books for all kids! Every year on MLK Day, we bring our BIG dreams to this community event that is part book drive, part concert, part food truck rodeo, part activity fair, part volunteer opportunity…and ALL celebration and fun! In 2019 alone, the event brought in 44,092 donated books. More than 600 people attended, helping prepare all those books to go into the hands and homes of North Carolina’s children. And we raised $100,592 to help keep books flowing to young readers all year long.
