Watts Hospital was the Durham’s first hospital, operating between 1895 and 1976. The hospital was funded entirely by George W. Watts and they even offered free care to those unable to pay. The hospital closed in 1976, when Durham County General Hospital opened. The grounds and buildings of the hospital’s 1909 campus were converted to become the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. I love how they have maintained the history! This house was the original Watts Hospital ? Completed in 1895 and by 1909 it wasn’t big enough, so a new facility was built off Club Boulevard. Which is now the NC School of Math and Science. Swipe to see it back in 1895! The last photo is the 1909 building today. I just love Durham history!
