Durham, N.C. — Today Durham’s beloved NanaTaco officially becomes NuvoTaco. Diners can expect the same hand pressed corn tortillas, house pickled jalapeños, and “Dirty Meats”, the same lively dining room full of local art, and the same dedicated staff that have made it a Durham institution since Jennifer Gillie and Scott Howell opened in 2011. In late 2018, the restaurant officially transitioned from a partnership with Howell to Gillie becoming sole owner.
“I’m excited to continue this legacy with our team and to play our part in Durham’s thriving food scene,” said Gillie. “This transition in ownership has been discussed for years and while our name is changing, our commitment to quality food and exceptional guest experiences will stay the same.”
Howell and Gillie opened NanaTaco in September 2011 in a former garage on University Drive in Durham. A Durham native, Gillie has been in the restaurant industry for most of her life. She ran the restaurant daily, drawing from Howell’s experience operating Nana’s while building a strong and loyal staff in the kitchen and on the floor. The sale to Gillie continues Howell’s trend of nurturing new owner operators in the bustling Durham restaurant scene — this has worked notably with previous ventures like Durham Catering Co. and the Original Q-Shack.
The foundation of NuvoTaco’s concept is fresh food, made from quality ingredients, served quickly by an enthusiastic and friendly staff. The restaurant is known for its tacos, burritos, bowls, nachos, quesadillas and salads all served with your choice of meat, seafood and veggies. Their renowned “Dirty Meats” up the ante with local hog jowls and pork belly, crispy chicken liver and more. Equally popular is their selection of craft beers and specialty cocktails, including the $5 Margarita, mojitos and sangrita.
